Restore Shine: A Guide to Removing Tarnish from Brass-Plated Lamps

Brass is a common metal used in households. Manufacturers make brass or brass-plated beds, bathroom and kitchen hardware and lamps. Brass plate is an alloy in which a very thin layer of brass is fused to the surface of another metal. Over time, a brass-plated lamp gets tarnish, which appears as green or grey film. It’s necessary to remove tarnish gently so as not to remove the brass plate as well.

  • Unplug the lamp and remove the light bulb.

  • Dust the lamp to remove any surface dust or dirt.

  • Mix ½ cup vinegar with 1 tbs. salt in a bowl. Add enough flour to create a thick paste.

  • Dip a cotton cloth into the paste and apply to tarnish on the lamp.

  • Keep the paste on the lamp for 10 minutes.

  • Wet a cloth and wipe off the paste. Rinse the cloth and repeat until you remove all paste.

  • Dry lamp with a cloth. Then rub lamp until the brass plate shines.
