Bryant forced air furnaces heat your home in the winter with either gas or oil. While most furnaces, Bryant included, are only about 80 percent efficient, a secondary heat exchanger located near the exhaust can increase a furnace's efficiency. The secondary heat exchanger in Bryant furnaces gets covered in dust and soot after use. Cleaning the heat exchanger keeps your furnace's efficiency top notch.
Turn off the furnace and allow it to cool.
Lift the handle and pull the door up to open it.
Locate the secondary heat exchanger, a number of tubes, near the exhaust pipe.
Vacuum the surface of the tubes to remove the dust and soot. Use a brush attachment. Scrub the tubes with a stiff brush to remove any built up carbon deposits.
Wet a cloth and scrub between the heat exchanger tubes with it to clean any soot from the crevices.
Turn the furnace back on and shut the door.
