Effective Maggot Removal & Cleaning Guide: A Step-by-Step Approach

Maggots are the larva of insects. Flies are notorious for laying eggs in dirty areas. Maggots hatch from these eggs, causing filthy places such as trash cans to be filled with these pests. It's important to rid your household of these creatures as soon as possible. Cleaning maggots may seem daunting at first because these squirmy larva are unpleasant to look at, but it is rather easy to get rid of these pests.

  • Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from coming in direct contact with the maggots.

  • Pour Pine Sol over the maggots.

  • Fill a pot with water and place it on the stove. Bring the water to a boil. If the maggots are invading a place where you are afraid to dump boiling water because you think it will melt the product, very hot water can be used instead. Always use the warmest water possible.

  • Dump the boiling water over the maggots. Once the maggots are submerged in the boiling water, they should be dead.

  • Put the maggots into a trash bag and seal it immediately.

  • Dispose of the maggots in an outdoor trash bin or at a garbage dump. Do not leave the maggot-infested bag in your home.

  • Use bleach and warm water to thoroughly clean the trash can or other place where the maggots had been. If the maggots invaded a place that can't be bleached, anti-bacterial dish soap is a good alternative.

  • Dry the area completely with paper towels.

  • Kill any adult flies in your home by using bug spray. Maggots can't exist with out their adult counter parts laying eggs. If adult flies are still in your house, it is likely the maggots will return.
