Easy Microwave Vent Cleaning: Prevent Clogs & Maintain Performance

Microwave ovens are engineered to make cooking and reheating foods a fast process. An important component in its operation is the exhaust function, but grease or other liquid particles sometimes blow through the exhaust vents with the air. When this happens, the grease can adhere to the vents and eventually cause them to clog. If you make cleaning the exhaust vents part of your regular oven cleaning routine, they will stay free of clogs and the oven will perform as it should.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloths
  • Warm water
  • Empty spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Wipe away any surface grease and dirt from the vents with a dry, clean cloth. The dirt and grease may smear a bit, but it will be removed later.

  • Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar. Vinegar is a natural grease-cutting agent and is safe for most surfaces.

  • Dampen a clean cloth with warm water. Spray vinegar onto the cloth until it is fully saturated. Wring out excess vinegar into the sink.

  • Wipe away surface grease and dirt from the vents. Carefully poke an edge of the cloth between each of the vent slats until all the vents are clean.

  • Rinse away any vinegar residue from the microwave with a clean cloth dampened with warm water.
