Australia's Fitness Trends: Fitbit Activity Index Insights

So how do Aussies like to stay fit? The Fitbit activity index revealed some interesting results…

How does your fitness routine stack up against others in the country? You’re about to find out. Fitbit looked at the logged activities of more than one million users from Australia, the US, the UK and Canada to create a ranking of the top fitness activities around the globe. The data from approximately 100,000 Australian Fitbit users was analysed and here are the results of how Aussies like to stay active.

Most popular fitness activities

Fitbit looked at data from not only Australian users as a whole but also broke it down into men vs women and various age groups including millennials, gen xers and baby boomers. Despite the fact Aussies have access to numerous fancy hybrid workouts, expensive gym equipment and lots of high-tech training methods, across the board it seemed good ol’ fashioned running still reigned supreme, closely followed by biking, strength training, swimming and circuit training. Calisthenics (classified as bodyweight training) ranked highly for men whereas women preferred to box it out or do stretching exercises such as yoga and Pilates. Here’s how the fitness activities ranked in each category:

Up and coming fitness trends

It seems the more health conscious Aussies become, the more new and interesting ways to train hit our shores. Here are some of the top fitness trends identified by Fitbit:

PiYo – Why choose one workout when you can combine two workouts in one? This at-home, 8-week training programme is a hybrid between Pilates and Yoga which means lots of stretching and lots of ab work.

Barre – More and more barre studios are popping up which shows that our love affair with this workout that combines yoga, ballet and Pilates is showing no signs of waning.

Bodypump – Virtually anyone who has ever checked out the group training classes at their local gym would be familiar with Pump classes. This weight training class is great for anyone who wants to pump iron but wants instruction at the same time.
