Pilates for Golfers: Improve Your Swing & Performance

Improve your golf swing with some core strength exercises.

Golf is reported to be the fastest-growing recreational activity of modern times. But more than 60 per cent of all recreational golfers will suffer one or more golf-related injuries, mostly resulting from poor mechanics, lack of flexibility, unbalanced posture and lack of preparation.

Even a marginal improvement in core strength and posture will dramatically improve general performance, swing, placement and drive consistency, with a reduced risk of injury and pain. Many pro golfers swear by Pilates for muscle balancing, core conditioning, posture, physical strength and endurance. The Pilates "twist" manoeuvre will help strengthen the muscles used to swing a golf club.

Try this: With one foot in front of the other, balancing on one arm, exhale to twist under and reach toward your back foot, while lifting your pelvis into the air. Inhale and return to the start. Try three to five repetitions on each side.
