QuestionDear Sir
I would like to know whether is dietary fibre (as in oats, whole wheat biscuit etc) consists of soluble and insoluble fibre? And is soluble fibre able to reduce cholesterol? If yes what kind of food has this soluble fibre and what food has better soluble fibre.
Thank you. Your reply is very much appreciated.
Sincerely
Eddie
AnswerHello Eddie!
Thank you for your nutrition question. There are two main types of fiber: soluble and insoluble.
Soluble fibers dissolve in water. Soluble fibers include: pectin, guar, carrageenan, gums, mucilage, and oat bran.
Insoluble fibers do not dissolve in water. Insoluble fibers include cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.
Some good sources of fiber are: cooked dried beans and peas, oat bran, fresh fruit, and fresh vegetables.
The best fiber that helps to reduce cholesterol is soluble fiber. Dietary sources like oats and dried peas and beans are excellent for a healthy diet. Hope this helps.
