Understanding Obesity: A 23-Year-Old's Journey & Weight Loss Goals

Question
QUESTION: Hi! I'm a 23 year old female and my current weight is 333.6. I've been obese all of my life. My parental side of the family are all obese, so I'm guessing my obesity is heredity. I got married two years ago weighing at 250lbs, and moved to Dominican Republic for two years, in which i gained almost hundred pounds. Now I am back in NY, my husband and i are trying to conceive, and even though i was told by my GYN i could get pregnant obese or not, i am trying all i can to lose weight. I've joined a gym in which i go 3 times a week, but starting this week i am planning on going 5 times a week, i only walk on the treadmill for an hour. Also, I've joined Weight Watchers, my starting weight was 338lb now like i mentioned before i am at 333.6lb, I've only been in Weight Watchers for a month, but i feel great losing not much per week, but it's something. I was wondering if there's anything else i could do to speed up my progress?

ANSWER: Congrats on all of the exciting things going on in your life!

I think that the most important part about losing weight is the nutririon. It is 90% nutrition and the exercise is the icing on the top. I would find an eating plan that you are comfortable with. Weight Watchers is fine. Then make sure that you are eating absolutely clean. Focus on that.

QUESTION: I've tried so many diets in the past, but with weight watchers i lost weight the first week and continue on doing so. As of now i feel comfortable with this program, and getting results, which is great, little or a lot, I say something is something. Before i start lifting weights, i want to lose a few more pounds, in order to have that extra energy, because as of now i don't feel prepared enough.

Answer
If you are getting results, stick with it!  Nutrition is the most important part.

A word on exercise- it actually gives you MORE energy!  If you aren't a member at a gym, try working out at home on DVD.  You will be suprised at how effective the DVDs are and how you can modify them to meet your current fitness level.  Don't let "weights" scare you.  You can use resistance bands (less than $10 for a bag of three at Walmart or Target) to build muscle.  You can research programs online.  Jillian Michaels has some good and cheap and quick ones.  Do not neglect this portion of your journey!

Good Luck,
