Ovarian Cysts & Amenorrhea: Understanding Your Condition & Treatment Options

Question
i have had ovarian cysts, bilateral, unilocular simple, and ammenorrhoea for 4 years.. i was diagnosed with the cysts 2 years earlier and my doctor at that time put me on contraceptives saying that since they contain estrogens they'll reduce the cysts. recently an untrasound told me that the cysts did not reduce.. with the contraceptives the dose was such that i took pills for 3 weeks and in the 4th week i used to mensturate. recently another doctor put me on other pills, premarin, which are also estrogens but i'm supposed to take them during my period (which i'm actually not having so he told me to take them for 10 days every month).. and that with this medicine my normal natural cycles will start.
my question(s) is (are) that the reason for the cysts is that my eggs are not being released from the ovaries.. right? they are being produced but not being released, so unless my eggs are released how can i have my natural cycles? will this medicine make the eggs release from the ovaries and drop into my uterus?
secondly, can i, at present, get pregnant?

Answer
Cysts are produced after the egg is released from the ovary (ovulation) when the space that the egg came from fills in with either fluid or blood. These cysts usually disappear each month and regrow. A cyst that you had a few months ago  is not the same cyst that you have now. We do not do anything unless the diameter of the cyst is greater than 6cm. If it is less than 5cm in diameter we only watch the cysts and use birth control pills to try to make it smaller. You should still be on birth control pills. The Estrogen is being used, not for the cysts, but to try to regulate your period. Obviously, you did not get your period. You should have been given progesterone (Provera) to bring on your period. If it did not work, then Estrogen (Premarin) should have been given to you for 30 days and you should take progesterone for the last ten days. Once you get your period, you should go back on birth control pills.  Ovarian cysts will not prevent you from becoming pregnant. However, you have to first regulate your cycle before you can become pregnant. Once you regulate your cycle, you will ovulate regularly again. Just follow the directions of your gynecologist.
