Pregnancy and Hot Showers: Risks & Core Temperature

Question
I am 19, I have no children, and my last menstrual period was December 30th.

I am currently 8 weeks pregnant. I know I am supposed to avoid hot tubs and saunas, but I had been told that there is no way my shower at home could be hot enough to raise my core temperature. Today I was in the shower and got a little dizzy, so I thought I should take my temperature just to know how hot I had been getting. It was 99.6! I know I have been in water that hot other times in the past few weeks as well, so now I am worried about the risk of miscarriage and birth defects. How concerned should I be?

Answer
Showers and baths at home are fine during pregnancy as long as the temperature does not get hotter than 110 degrees F. We also recommend that you keep a window open a crack so that the room does not get too hot. It is doubtful that your baby will  have any skeletal muscle defects or cardiac problems from home showers or baths.
