Mirena Removal & Period Irregularities: What's Normal?

Question
I'm a little confused...I removed my mirena on march 15 and I should be having my some symptoms of my period by now especially since I should be on by the 11th. I had unprotected sex on the 22 of march and I am a little confused. usually I would be having some symptoms like breast tenderness, or cramps and stomach pains but I am having none. I do find myself not getting any sleep at night, frequent urination, nausea all throughout the day and some bloating. Should I still be expecting my period or should I start testing for pregnancy? Thanks for all your help.

Answer
Dear Alisha,

If your period is not actually due until today (4/11), then I would not start panicking yet. Your unprotected encounter on 3/22 may or may not have resulted in a pregnancy. If you expect your period on 4/11, then that tells me ovulation should have probably occurred on approximately 3/28 (based on a 28 day cycle). That is beyond when sperm cells from the 3/22 encounter would have survived to fertilize the egg. However, if you happened to ovulate earlier in the cycle or if your cycles are less than 28 days, then you could have conceived.

My suggestion is to wait and see what happens with this cycle. The fact that the Mirena was just removed may be playing a part in your lack of symptoms. It may take your body a little bit to start regulating things on its own again.

If you do not get a period for this entire week, then go ahead and test for pregnancy next week. Make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. If it comes back negative, I'd be inclined to think that your cycles are just having a bit of a delay in getting started again after the Mirena removal.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
