QuestionHi-My husband and I are ready to begin trying for our first, but I'm worried about the prescription drugs my husband takes (Adderall, Wellbutrin, Singulair) and if they could have any ill-effect on his sperm and, ultimately, the development of the baby. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this and/or if you have advice on where to go for more information. Thanks!
AnswerDear Amie,
I cannot find any information about a reduced sperm count and any association with these medications. Meds for high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease, gout, or immunosuppressives are known to suppress sperm counts. As well as cimetidine (Tagamet and others) for suppressing stomach acid cause this side effect.
Supplementing with lycopene, Vitamin C, and zinc has been reported to help with male fertility. A good multi-vitamin should have all of these ingredients, plus selenium and folic acid, which also aid in sperm production.
Another consideration is to make sure he avoids hot baths, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, etc,... Keeping the scrotal temperature low is necessary for higher sperm counts.
Alcohol and smoking also affects sperm counts. Limiting these activities while trying to conceive will help with sperm count as well.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
