Pregnancy & Previous Hip Injury: Addressing Pain & Concerns

Question
I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and have recently noticed pressure in my abdomen and pain/pressure that feels like it's radiating from my pubic bone. I've also noticed that when I turn over when I'm sleeping, I hear a very loud/noticeable popping noise that comes from my hip. Prior to getting pregnant I suffered a hip injury and have been diagnosed with chronic right sacroiliac joint strain with secondary groin pain. I have discussed my hip injury with my OBGYN and she seems convinced that I will still be able to deliver vaginally with no problems and tells me that my hips expanding is normal. My only concern is that by delivering vaginally, it will only make my condition worse and possibly pose a risk to not only my baby while he is being delivered but also myself and my ability to have future children after him. Do you think it is in my best interest to deliver vaginally or to keep pushing for a caesarean section? Thank you for your time.

Answer
Dear Katie

A decision in your case needs to be taken after your doctor talks with the orthopedics doctor who made the diagnosis of the hip strain.

Myself would never make a decision solely without consulting a colleage who is specialized in bone disease. You should suggest this to your Ob/Gyn. Obstetrician have no experience in the consequences of bone diseases.

Good Luck
