Egg Donation: Risks and Considerations for Donors
QuestionHi - I am considering donating my eggs for my auntie who has been trying to have a baby for years and is now going to go through IVF.. I would like to know what risks there are to me - I am not finished having my own family and am reasonably fit and healthy. Many thanks, Jo
AnswerHello,
There are usually no significant risks relating to his, however you will have to undergo ovarian stimulation using injectable medications which can have some side effects. The reproductive endocrinologist that you use can explain the side effects and risks, depending on which medications they use. There is also a slight risk during the surgery when the eggs are retrieved, of having ovarian hyperstimulation and loss of an ovary. These risks are usually very minimal. The doctor should explain all of these slight risks before you begin stimulation. Best of luck.
