MTHFR Gene & Pregnancy Loss: Understanding C677T & c1298 Mutations

Question
I have been trying to find an OB that can help me because I do NOT want to go to a fertility clinic. I have had 2 previous miscarriages 1st was a  second trimester loss in 9/09  most recent 12/09. I have not been able to get pregnant since then.

I finally did some research and had my ob run some blood work and I have just been told by my OB  that I tested positive for Heterozygous for MTHFR C677T and also positive for c1298 c mthfr gene. I know for a fact that this can be treated to be able to have a baby again.

For the life of me I can NOT find a OB in AZ that will see me to help me get pregnant again. Have you had any experience with this? Could you maybe point me in the right direction? Thank you so very much in advance.

Answer
Hello Christina from the U.S.,

The reason you cannot find an Ob that will help you in this regard is because you are exceeding their knowledge base.  You need to see someone who is expert in miscarriages i.e. a reproductive endocrinologist/infertility specialist, who is the expert on miscarriages or an Obstetrical subspecialist called a Perinatologist, who is expert on high risk pregnancies.  The latter specialist might be able to help you but, not always.

Recurrent miscarriage is considered an infertility or reproductive problem and that is why it is in the specialty of a fertility specialist.  I don't know of anyone specifically in Arizona that I could refer you do, but I know there are a lot of infertility specialists there.

In terms of on-line sources, you might want to check out reproductive immunology associates (www.rialabs.com#, an internal medicine speciality group #immunologists) who have chosen to specialize in reproductive failures and miscarriages only.
