Calcium & Vitamin D: Do You Need Supplements?

Question
In my nutrition class last semester I learned that Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin meaning an individual does not need to take supplements to ensure that he or she has enough of the vitamin because it is stored in tissue (also because we get enough through foods). I also learned that vitamin D is important for calcium absorption.  After learning that I do not need a vitamin D supplement, I started taking a calcium supplement wthout vitamin D in it (most have vitamin D in them).  I did this because I take a multi vitamin (which has vitamin D in it) at the same time I take my calcium supplement (with no vitamin D).  Will the vitamin D in my multi vitamin aid me in absorbing the calcium I am taking at the same time or do I need to take a calcium pill with vitamin D in it?

Answer
It is generally better if you take some vit D with the calcium dose to improve absorption of calcium and phosphorus and even better if you take 250mg or more of magnesium to improve the calcium's chance of getting into the bones and prevents the constipation usually occurring with calcium use.
The vit D is fat soluble so it does store as you say but need at least 30 minutes daily of sun exposure to face, neck and hands to fully activate the vitamin D which is in your food.
