Seborrheic Dermatitis Relief: OTC Treatments & Expert Advice

Question
I have a condition known as "seborrheic dermatitis" on the right side of my face. Can you give me the name of an over-the-counter product that would help alleviate this condition? Thank you very much. Al Brown

Answer
Hi Al,

First, you must shave off any beard or facial hairs in that area as it is actually causing the fungus to grow. You can use nizoral shampoo to wash the area first or a regular anti-bacterial facial wash. Then, apply 2% Nizoral cream (generic is ketoconazole, which is cheaper) twice daily to affected area. If there's a rash or it itches, you can apply 1% hydrocortisone cream twice daily to affected area. ***Apply the ketoconazole first... then wait an hour before applying the hydrocortisone cream. Use both products for 2 weeks. Ketoconazole may be needed for up to 4 weeks to resolve the problem.

Please note that if you are allergic to any of those creams, you must consult your physician for a prescription steroid cream.
