Understanding and Relieving Hip Pain from Sitting
QuestionLately...when I've been sitting at my computer for a couple of hours my hips will start to hurt (one side at a time...never both together). I have added pillows and foam to the seat of my chair and even purchased an inflatable donut (usually for hemorrhoid sufferers) but nothing seems to help. Could this be something other than me needing to buy a new chair with better padding on the seat?
AnswerHi Candy and thanks for writing,
I'm sure a better quality chair would help correct your posture and provide more support, but it may not alleviate your hip pain. I'm wondering if perhaps your pain is due to either pressure on a nerve or decreased circulation. Why don't you try taking a 5 min break every hour and get moving - go for a walk, go up a few flights of stairs, anything to get the blood flowing to/from your hips. You might alternate and every other hour try lying flat on your back (taking the pressure off) and seeing if that helps.
Otherwise I would certainly mention it to your GP next time you see him.
All the best,
Margot
