Paternity Uncertainty After Unprotected Sex: Seeking Guidance

Question
QUESTION: I split up with my ex partner a couple of weeks ago and ended up having a drunken one night stand on Friday 13 March(!). I took the morning after pill about 48 hours later, after learning that the condom had split. I then got back together with my ex the day after and we had a lot of make up sex, not always completely safe. I am now pregnant. I had my last period for three days at the beginning of March, it was very light. I am keeping the baby but am confused as to who is the more likely father. Please help! I know what I've done is wrong but I am keeping the baby regardless.

ANSWER: Quick question- did you have a period after taking the morning after pill?  The morning after pill will not work if conception took place that night.

Let me know so that I can help you further.

Best wishes,
Helen =)

QUESTION: No I didn't have a period after that. I had my last period at beginning of March and haven't had one since! I was due beginning of April but missed it and discovered I was pregnant. I took the morning after pill on 15th March but had careless sex with my partner after that. VERY confused! Cheers

Answer
Unfortunately, there is no way to tell who the father is at this point due to the encounters being so close together. I recommend you inform both men of the possibility and schedule a DNA paternity test with your hospital, birthing center, or pediatrician to be done soon after the baby is born. Because the morning after pill won't work if conception already took place, there is really an equal chance that either man could be the father. I'm sorry. =(

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen
