QuestionThanks for your help. I also, I was just wondering if when you start the pill for your first time ever, do you have to wait 28 days(which is your whole pack) untill you can actually do it. My doctor never told me that, but my friends cousin says she takes the same pill that I do and that her doctor told her she has to use the whole first pack of the pills and wait 28 days until you can actually do it.....I am cdonfused and don't understand it, since I am all new to it. Help would be appreciated again. thank you once again.

Hi,
I recently just got birth control pills for the first time. The pills that I am taking are called ortho-tri-cyclen. They asked me when I start my period when I went in my appointment to get the pills, I told them I would probably start september 28th. So they told me to start taking the pills october 2nd, but the thing is my period last for seven days and also today is the 29th and I still haven't started my period. Should I go ahead and still take it the second of october or what? We already have plans on the day that we are gonna do it, and that is next saturday, if I am no on my period cause i will never do anything on my period. please help.
thank you.

ok, here's the deal: they told you to start taking the pill on Sunday the 2nd October, because it's the first Sunday after your period was supposed to start.
the general rule is to start taking the pill (when for the 1st time), on the 1st day of your period. some doctors though, tell patients to start on the next sunday after that happens so that it's an easier day to remind them to start the new pack.
truth is, i personally don't think being a sunday helps any more than any other day, if the person is responsible and manages to find ways not to forget about the pill (there are many things you can do!).
so although i'm not a doctor here, i'd tell you to start your pill on the 1st day of your period. if you want to be a "sunday starter", start the pill the next sunday after your period comes.
don't start your pill before your period comes because it can mess with your cycle and you should avoid that.
also, and most important, please wait a full cycle of being on the pill to have umprotected sex. even after that, you should make sure neither of you has any std's or sti's by getting full tests (and keep doing them every 6 months).
Answeryes, it is generally the opinion that one should wait a whole cycle (pack of pills)... although some brands claim it is effective after the 1st week of taking, or even after the 1st day if started on the 1st day of the period.
but the things is different bodies adjust in different ways, and while it can work instantly for some people, for others it could take longer so the full cycle is the most secure option.
