Microgynon and Period Changes: What to Expect & When to Worry

Question
Dear Andrea,

I have just gne back on the pill again (microgynon)after a few months off it. I took the pill on the first day of my period, and now my period has completely gone! Are these side effects of the pill? Is my body readjusting to going back on it? Am i on the right type of pill? This has happened once before when i went back on the pill after a few months off it. I'm worried as my period seems to have disappeared! I've never had any problems taking microgynon in the past. I am 33 years old, do you think i should try another brand of pill?

Thanks, Ellie.

Answer
Hi Ellie. Birth Control can often lead to very light or occasionally missed periods. Its likley your "disappering" periods are due to the pill. And although I cant tell you if this pill is right for you, as your doctor accesses everything from family history to your current health to decide wich is right, I would encourage you to look into other pills, and discuss with your doctor switching, if the side effects you are having with this one concern you.

There are MANY brands out there, the most popular being Ortho TriCyclen and Yasmin. Each pill carries side effects, and many of them are the same. Its not uncommon to try a few brands before finding the one that works best. A simple internet search will tell you a little more about whats out there, so  if you decide to switch, you will be able to discuss it with you physician further.

Thanks, and Take Care,

Andrea.
