Desogen vs. Yasmin: Hair Thinning & Birth Control - Expert Advice

Hi Diane - My daughter is taking Desogen for severe cramps.  For the last 8 months her hair has been thinning very quickly.  The doctor said that we could switch her to yasmin.  I thought Yasmin and Desogen were pretty much the same.  Would any of these help hair loss?  Would desogen be why she has lost hair?  All her labs were well within normal.

Thanks for your question. I'm glad that you are concerned about your daughter. I don't ever recommend hormonal birth control because of side effects and risks to health. Yes, hair loss has been reported from the pill. I haven't heard of switching to another kind of hormonal birth control to prevent the hair loss. I would rather recommend getting off hormonal birth control completely. If you email me at DCHERYL51@yahoo.com we can talk about this and other side effects. Oh, I forgot--I do have a friend who might be able to help with something natural for easing cramps, not something hormonal.
