Straightening Hair with Hairspray: Risks and How to Avoid Damage

It's generally not recommended to straighten your hair when you have hairspray in it. Here's why:

* Heat Damage: Hairspray often contains alcohol and polymers that are flammable and heat-sensitive. When you apply a hot tool like a straightener to hair with hairspray, these substances can essentially "cook" onto the hair shaft, leading to:

* Increased breakage: The hair can become brittle and snap easily.

* Dryness: The hair will lose moisture and become more prone to frizz.

* Dullness: The hair's natural shine can be diminished.

* Difficulty straightening: Instead of smoothing, the hair may become sticky or stiff.

* Residue Buildup on Straightener: The hairspray can leave a sticky residue on the plates of your straightener. This residue can further damage your hair and shorten the lifespan of your tool.

What to do instead:

1. Wash Your Hair: The best approach is to wash your hair thoroughly to remove all traces of hairspray. Make sure you use a good quality shampoo and conditioner.

2. Dry and Protect: Allow your hair to dry completely (or blow-dry it) before straightening. Apply a heat protectant spray or serum to minimize damage from the heat.

3. Straighten and Style: Once your hair is clean, dry, and protected, you can safely straighten it.

4. Apply Hairspray After: If you need to use hairspray to hold your style, apply it *after* you've finished straightening.

If you absolutely can't wash your hair:

* Brush Thoroughly: Brush your hair vigorously to try to remove as much hairspray as possible. This is a far less ideal solution.

* Use a Low Heat Setting: If you must straighten, use the lowest heat setting that still allows you to achieve the desired result.

* Clean Your Straightener: After using your straightener on hair with hairspray residue, clean the plates immediately with a damp cloth while the tool is cool (but not cold).

In summary, it's best to avoid straightening hair with hairspray. It's much safer to remove the hairspray first to protect your hair from damage.
