Highlights Over Semi-Permanent Hair Color: What You Need to Know

It's not possible to "highlight" over semi-permanent hair color in the traditional sense. Here's why:

* Semi-permanent color doesn't lift existing color. It only deposits color onto the hair shaft, coating the existing pigment.

* Highlights require lightening. To create highlights, you need to lighten the hair to achieve a brighter shade. Semi-permanent color cannot lift the existing color, so it wouldn't create the lighter sections necessary for highlights.

What you can do:

* Use a semi-permanent color that's a shade lighter than your existing color. This can create a subtle brightening effect, but won't be the same as true highlights.

* Try a temporary highlighting product. These products, like spray-on highlights or temporary hair chalk, can give you a temporary highlight effect without needing to lighten your hair.

* Go to a salon for professional highlights. If you want a permanent change, a salon professional can safely lift your hair to create the desired highlights.

Important Note: If you're considering using semi-permanent color on top of existing color, it's crucial to choose a product that's compatible with your hair type and color. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and test a small strand of hair first to avoid unexpected results.
