Understanding Dark Skin: Melanin and UV Protection

The amount of melanin in the skin is the primary factor determining skin color in people with dark skin. Melanin is a pigment produced by cells called melanocytes. People with dark skin have more active melanocytes that produce a greater amount of melanin. This increased melanin provides protection from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.
