For Kate Hudson, self-care routines are sacred. The mom of three prioritizes carving out time to spend alone, nurturing her skin.
In a recent Instagram video, Hudson shared the specific steps she takes during that self-care time. After soaking a towel in warm water, she turns on what commenters say is a Vanity Planet Aira Ionic facial steamer and breaks out her latest release in collaboration with Juice Beauty: the Revitalizing Acacia + Rose Powdered Mask.
The Almost Famous star then takes the extra few minutes to bask in the steamer’s warm moisture—a practice that’s not only relaxing but actually helps her subsequent skincare penetrate deeper into the skin, as previously confirmed to Prevention by double-licensed esthetician Jessica Houston.

Hudson has been vocal about leaning into self-care in the past. “Any ritual that slows down the process of your day, anything that connects you to honoring yourself, is actually good for the brain. I think it’s important,” she recently told Allure. “Self-care is a million different things to me, but at the same time, for me personally, I love my beauty routines. It’s kind of the one time I have to myself in my bathroom.”
The even flow of the facial steamer gives the skin a boost of hydration. “Facial steaming can hydrate and soften the skin to help better remove dirt and soiling,” Joshua Zeichner, M.D., director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital added.
However, despite what you’ve previously heard, steaming does not open your pores. “It's a myth,” Dr. Zeichner said. “Your pores have no muscle around them and they don't get bigger or smaller depending on the temperature.”
Still, the pros of steaming certainly outweigh the cons. And when it comes to choosing one for an at-home spa treatment, there are plenty of options available at various price points, all of which will get the job done.
When it comes to the rest of Hudson’s routine, she likes to keep it minimal and simple. “I thought that as I got older my skin would be able to take more. And, in fact, my skin is sensitive. The less I use the better,” she explained to Allure. She’s even stopped washing her face in the morning. Instead, she just splashes it with water (and a little steam, of course).
“I stopped and then my skin got so much better. So that’s what I do. And I've been doing it forever,” she said.
