Ancient Egyptian Eyeshadow: Colors, Materials & Meanings

The ancient Egyptians used a variety of colors for eyeshadow, but some of the most common and notable were:

* Black: Made from galena (lead sulfide). This was extremely popular for creating the iconic dark, dramatic eye look.

* Green: Usually made from malachite, a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral. Green was associated with rebirth and regeneration.

* Blue: Made from azurite, a copper carbonate mineral, or other copper compounds.

* Other colors: While black, green, and blue were common, Egyptians also used shades of brown, red (ochre), and other colors derived from minerals and natural pigments.
