The Qing Dynasty Queue Hairstyle: History & Significance

The Qing dynasty hairstyle for men was the queue (辮子, biànzi).

It involved shaving the front of the head above the forehead every ten days or so, while growing the hair long in the back and braiding it into a single pigtail.

This hairstyle was mandated for all Han Chinese men after the Qing dynasty took power in 1644 as a sign of submission to the new rulers. Refusal to adopt the queue was seen as an act of defiance and could be punished by death.
