Carbohydrates and Weight Gain: Understanding the Connection

Living a healthy lifestyle requires eating all three proteins, carbohydrates and fat. However, these three energy nutrients could easily transform into fat when not eaten in the amount. Among all of them, carbs tend to turn into fat when compared with the others. This is why a person who lives on carbs is fatter from other people. Avoiding such a condition is not a big task, and can be triggered only with balancing the food nutrients during the meals. Eating all the nutrients in right balance reduces the chance of turning the carbs into fat. Some may keep aside carbs in fear of the fat, but it remains yet true that our body procures its fundamental energy from carbs alone. Knowledge on how the carbs turns into fat would surely help one with the right eating method.

How do Carbs make you Fat?

Some of you use to believe that only fat foods make obese. Interestingly enough, this is myth, as carbohydrate is another great source of fat in human body. When not used as energy, carbs turn into fat quite easily. The carbs generally tend to transform into glucose first, that helps in burning energy. When the energy does not come to use by the body, it tends to change into fat. This is the main reason why the amount of glucose increases rapidly in the blood after a carb-rich meal. It indirectly helps to increase the level of insulin in the blood that is again responsible for speeding up the fat storage within the body.

As fats do not generally obtain an insulin response, they can hardly be stored as body fat. Insulin takes the glucose out of blood and converts into starch named glycogen. Glycogen stores in muscles and liver. When the body is not capable to store glycogen, it stores the extra amount as body fat. This is how carbs turn into body fat.

1. De Novo Lipogenesis – The Direct Way Carbs Turns Into Fat:

There is a direct and an indirect way by which carbs turns into fat. The direct process is known as de novo lipogenesis that means formation of fat from other non-fat sources. This process takes place within the body after eating a carb-rich meal. By this process, glucose turns into lipid, which in turn transforms into fat. Possibility of this direct process of carbs turning into body fat is low, but it might enhance rapidly when one eats carb-rich diet all the time. An obesogenic diet, which is full of carbohydrate rich foods, is also responsible for expediting this process.

2. Insulin – The Indirect Way Carbs Turns Into Fat:

Though indirect, it is the most common pattern how carbohydrates turn into body fat. Eating carbs in large amount speed up secretion of insulin that mediates glucose metabolism. This hormone is not the main villain that causes storing of the fat. It helps burning the carbs more compared to the fat. When the amount of insulin is increased due to the presence of ingested dietary fat, it normally stored as body fat as it is no more used as a source of energy.

3. Connection Between Carbs And Fat:

Human body can store up to 500 gm carbohydrates in the liver and muscles as glycogen. The store becomes full when your body is no more using fat for energy. Conversely, it gets the required energy from carbs. Therefore, eating in right balance of all the nutrients is essential for avoiding such a condition.
