Understanding IVF: What to Expect, Costs & Success Rates

One of the saddest things that a couple can ever go through is struggling to get pregnant. After they have tried everything else, they can try ivf treatments. These treatments can be effective for almost any couple as long as she is producing eggs and he is producing sperm. However, they can be incredibly expensive. Unless you live in a European country that pays for couples to have ivf treatments or have a very comprehensive insurance plan, you should expect to pay ten to twenty thousand dollars for your treatments.

After you choose a clinic, you will have to attend a couple of informational seminars. Then, the doctor will give you some hormones to take. Hopefully you will not be too squeamish to give yourself shots in the butt checks because that is where you will be putting your hormones. The hormones will make your ovaries produce extra eggs. However, these eggs will not have to travel down your fallopian tubes to your uterus to try to find a sperm there. Instead, they will be extracted by the doctor while they are still in your ovaries. Then, they will be introduced to the sperm in a laboratory. Your partner will not have to undergo such an ordeal. He will just be able to ejaculate into a sample cup. The doctor will take his sperm from that cup and introduce them to your eggs in the lab. Once the two have joined to make a fertilized egg, they will be allowed to spend a few days growing together. Then, they will be put into your uterus.

If you have a lot of embryos from your ivf treatments, you can choose to freeze some of them. You can use these frozen ones in a few years if you would like to try to have another kid. You can even do this after menopause. As long as you still have a uterus, you can use your frozen embryos. The embryos that you choose to use will try to grow in your uterus. The chances are high that you will experience a miscarriage for one or more of the embryos. Thus, the doctor will normally implant three to five embryos to increase your chances of getting a baby.

That is the basic outline of ivf treatments. If you have additional questions, you should explore the rest of this site or talk with your health care provider for more details. James Copper writes articles for IVFPlus.com where you can find out how IVF treatments can help you get pregnant
