Silver Care Guide: Prevent Tarnish & Keep Your Silver Sparkling

If you have some precious silver pieces in your family, you may know keeping them shiny and beautiful can be difficult. Here are a few tips to keep those pieces tarnish free and shiny for as long as possible.

  • Stop tarnish before it starts. If your pieces are just beginning to look tarnished, just wash them in warm, soapy water with a soft cloth to rinse away tarnish before it gets too bad.

  • Don't let your silver sit out in the air. The sulfur that's present in all air makes it tarnish quicker. Instead, place your silver in zip-loc type storage bags and seal them shut. Don't use rubber bands to seal them; the rubber has sulfur in it, too!

  • The acids in salad dressings, mayonnaise and eggs can tarnish your silver, so try not to serve these foods when you use your silver. Or, if you must, rinse it right away after you use your silver with these foods.
