Commercial air fresheners contain many synthetic fragrances and chemicals that can be harmful to your health. Chemical exposure can be especially harmful for people with chemical sensitivities and respiratory problems, for children and for the environment. If you like to add fragrance to your home without affecting air quality and risk exposure to possibly toxic chemicals, there are natural products that you can use.
Put a wedge of lemon in your garbage disposal and turn it on to deodorize it if you notice bad odors.
Place an open box of baking soda in the refrigerator. It will absorb unpleasant odors. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon baking soda in the bottom of the garbage bag in your kitchen trash can for the same results.
Bring to simmer some water in a pan and add cinnamon sticks and cloves. The air will be filled with the aromatic smell of these spices. You can also add apple, lemon or orange peels.
Grow indoor decorative plants and fresh herbs in your kitchen to increase the air quality in your home and make it smell good naturally. Scented geraniums, gardenias and wax plants are popular aromatic houseplants. Herbs like mint, basil and rosemary serve double function, as you can also use them for cooking.
Pour essential oils on cotton balls that you can place around the house. You can try lemon, orange, lavender and pine needle essential oils, or any other natural oils that you prefer.
