DIY Scented Bath Salts: A Relaxing & Budget-Friendly Guide

Soaking in a tub of warm water with bath salts can be a relaxing end to a day. Bath salts are sold commercially, but your choice in scents may be limited. You can easily create your own bath salts at home -- scented to your liking and much cheaper to boot. It doesn't take much time and you can make as much or as little as you want at a time. Bath salts also make nice homemade gifts.

  • Spread newspaper over your kitchen table. This protects the surface and provides easier cleanup in case you spill the salts or essential oil.

  • Place a mixing bowl on the newspaper. Use a measuring cup to measure 1 to 2 cups of sea salt into the mixing bowl.

  • Sprinkle 5 drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender, vanilla or lemongrass, into the salts. Put on a pair of rubber gloves.

  • Blend the salts with the oil, using your gloved hands. Use a large spoon to transfer the salts from the mixing bowl to a clean, glass jar.

  • Place the lid on the glass jar and let it set overnight. Open it in the morning to do a sniff test. If it is not as strongly scented as you prefer, add another drop of essential oil and stir it in with a teaspoon.
