Citric acid, found in citrus fruits like lemons, has a bleaching effect, dissolves grease and hard water particles, and prevents clouding. With growing concerns surrounding the chemicals used in many cleaning products, and using them on eating utensils, an organic, homemade dishwasher detergent with citric acid provides a healthier alternative. The homemade formula costs just pennies a load and does not require extremely hot water for effective cleaning, saving you money on your hot water bill as well.
Obtain the ingredients at your supermarket. Sodium carbonate, also called "washing soda," is a natural water softener, and is not to be confused with sodium bicarbonate, which is ordinary baking soda. Washing soda and borax can be located in the laundry section. Straight citric acid is used in canning, as a natural preservative, and can be located with the canning supplies.
Mix two parts sodium carbonate, two parts borax, one part salt, and one part citric acid
in a glass jar. Seal and store in the refrigerator.
Add 1 tbsp. per load and adjust upward as needed. Add white vinegar to the rinse dispenser, if desired.
