Effectively Remove Mold From Your Lunchbox: A Simple Guide

Mold grows and thrives in warm, moist environments. Apart from being unsightly, it can cause eye or skin irritation, wheezing and nasal congestion, especially in children. People with mold allergies can experience more severe reactions. A lunchbox can be a breeding ground for mold, especially if it's left in a locker or other warm place for extended periods of time. Luckily, simple, household bleach can kill just about every type of indoor mold on items made with non-porous materials, including lunchboxes.

  • Spray the lunchbox with water. Dry mold particles can become airborne and cause breathing difficulties.

  • Wash all surfaces of the lunchbox thoroughly with dish detergent and hot water. Remove as much mold as possible, and remember that not all mold is visible.

  • Mix a bleach solution of one part bleach to four parts of water in the kitchen sink. Soak the lunchbox in the solution for 15 minutes.

  • Remove the lunchbox from the solution and rinse it with clean water. Dry it thoroughly.
