Mastering the Top Bunk Bed: A Step-by-Step Guide

The top bunk is an elusive piece of furniture to make up acceptably, yet somehow our military men and women accomplish it every morning! The sides are difficult to access and the wood makes for an awkward reach no matter where you stand or sit. It's a great idea to involve kids in the bed making process, but they may not have the height or strength to do the more important parts of making the bed. Instead, have them put pillow cases on or help tuck in the sides once you've gotten everything in order.

  • Gather all materials. Get the sheet set and mattress cover if needed. Place everything on the end of the bed.

  • Position a stepladder at the head of the bed. The stepladder is a safe, sturdy and more effective alternative to making the bed while sitting on top of it. Alternatively, if your bed is sturdy enough, you can stand on the bottom bunk.

  • Take off the previous sheets, avoiding the new folded set at the foot. Gather the sheets and place or toss on the bottom bunk.

  • Add the mattress pad and fitted sheet. You may already have a mattress pad in place. If not, starting with the top corners, secure the pad. Move the stepladder to the foot of the bed and secure the pad to the bottom two corners. Take the sheet, starting with the bottom corners, and secure. Move the stepladder again and secure the top corners.

  • Add the top sheet. This sheet may prove a bit trickier, since there is more fabric. Drape the sheet over the bed upside down, so the underside of the sheet is facing up. This will allow the correct side to show when the top is folded down. Position the sheet so the sides hang equally and the top of the sheet is flush with the top of the bed.

  • Tuck everything in snugly. Start at the bottom of the bed and tuck in the bottom of the sheet, pulling the fabric out the sides of the bed. Then tuck in the side facing outwards. If the bed has access on all sides, great! If not, pull out the bed to finish tucking the side facing the wall.

  • Put on the comforter or blanket. Position the stepladder at the head of the bed again and add the blankets or comforter, making sure both sides are even and the top is at the same place as the sheet. According to your preference, leave the comforter loose, or tuck in using the same steps as the sheets.

  • Fold the sheet and comforter down far enough to fit the pillows. Add the pillows and fluff so they sit up nicely.
