K&N Air Filter Cleaning Guide: Restore Performance & Fuel Economy

K&N cold air filters are direct replacements for stock air filters on cars and various gas-powered appliances. K&N filters boast an improvement in horsepower and gas mileage. The only requirement for the filters is cleaning them on an annual or as-needed basis, which entails soaking the filter in a cleaning solution and rinsing with a low-pressure water faucet. The filter does have to be removed from the vehicle while being cleaned and dried.

  • Tap the filter lightly against any solid surface to dislodge solid debris and loose dust.

  • Spray K&N air filter cleaner onto both sides of the air filter. Allow the solution to soak for 10 minutes.

  • Rinse the filter thoroughly using a low-pressure faucet with room temperature water. Allow the filter to air-dry thoroughly.

  • Coat both sides of the filter with K&N oil. A light application is more than sufficient. Excessive oil will slow down the air flow. Allow the oil to penetrate and dry out moderately over a period of one hour.

  • Reinstall the air filter.
