Front-loading washing machines are attractive, efficient laundering machines that many homeowners in 2010 are choosing to replace older, inefficient models. Unfortunately, many homeowners find out after purchasing an expensive upgrade that a common problem among front-loading washing machines is the development of mildew on the door's rubber gasket. If the problem is not addressed early on, mildew will continue to form on the gasket and behind, eventually moving into door parts and requiring professional cleaning and repair in order to function properly.
Place an old towel on the floor in front of the washing machine to protect the floor and open the door.
Spray the gasket with a nonabrasive cleaner and scrub it with an old toothbrush to remove the mildew.
Set the washing machine to the heavy cycle and hot water.
Add a scoop of your regular laundry detergent and one cup of household bleach to the washer.
Turn the washing machine on and allow it to run through the full cycle empty.
Repeat the process once a month to prevent mildew buildup.
