A Kenmore canister vacuum cleaner model 116 helps to keep your house clean, but for it to do its job most effectively, you must tidy up the vacuum itself regularly. A dirty vacuum can wind up spreading filth rather than picking it up, and a buildup of debris can damage the vacuum motor and belt.
Turn off all the vacuum controls, and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Brush any clogs from the interior of the canister, wand and hose. Inspect the agitator assembly. Remove any dirt, debris, hair, string or lint from the brush and belt area.
Examine the exhaust filter cartridge, and replace it if the entire surface is covered with dirt. You cannot wash the filter.
Mix a solution of water and mild liquid detergent. Take a soft cleaning rag, and dip it into the solution. Wring the cleaning rag out until dry.
Wipe the exterior of the canister and all the attachments with the treated rag. Take care to remove dirt from the ends of the vacuum tool attachments so that they will not leave marks in future use. Wipe all the parts clean and dry with a fresh cloth.
