How to Safely Clean a Plastic Oil Reservoir - A Step-by-Step Guide

Cleaning oil off of anything can be a slippery subject, but cleaning oil out of a container that is both plastic and is designed to hold oil presents an interesting challenge. Cleaning a plastic oil reservoir completely can be done, though. The supplies you will require to get this job done are most likely already sitting in your kitchen cupboards, just waiting for you to go discover their surprising cleaning power.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Liquid dish detergent
  • Disposable cup or container
  • Bottle brush small enough in width to fit in the mouth or entrance to the oil reservoir
  • Paper towels
  • Measure out 4 cups of water into the bucket.

  • Measure out 2 tbsp. of liquid dish soap and add it to the water in the bucket.

  • Stir the soap and water mixture in the bucket until it is evenly mixed and a layer of bubbles forms on the surface of the water.

  • Remove the cap to the top of the plastic oil reservoir and set it aside.

  • Pour out any remaining oil in the reservoir in the disposable container.

  • Submerge the empty reservoir in the cleaning mixture in the bucket and fill it with the soapy water.

  • Dip the bottle brush into the cleaning mixture and then use it to scrub the inside of the reservoir.

  • Remove the bottle brush from inside the plastic reservoir and dump the water in the reservoir out into a sink.

  • Rinse the inside and outside of the plastic reservoir with clean water.

  • Repeat the process as needed until the inside of the reservoir is clean.

  • Set the plastic oil reservoir out on paper towels and allow it to air dry.
