Better known as the Black and Decker 18-V Pivoting Cordless Hand Vac, the PHV1800 -- like its replacement model, the PHV1810 -- is a battery-powered handheld vacuum intended for use in areas where a larger vacuum might prove cumbersome. The unit provides a simple solution for cleaning small areas or when there is not much dust or debris. With two speed settings and attachment accessories, this vacuum offers versatility and can be customized for each job.
Charge the battery for at least 16 hours, with the power switch in the "off" position. The vacuum cleaner comes with a charging base that must be plugged in and can be mounted on the wall or positioned on a counter or work surface. The unit should remain in the base when not in use.
Adjust the nozzle and attach any necessary accessories. Remove the vacuum from the base, press the pivot lock button and move the nozzle to the desired position. A button located on the nozzle can be depressed to extend the nozzle if needed. A crevice tool and brush tool are included with the vacuum and can be used for cleaning small spaces, carpeting or upholstery. These accessories can be installed by simply inserting them into the end of the nozzle.
Switch the unit on. The PHV1800 has two cleaning speeds. Setting the switch to the first position causes the unit to operate at a slower speed with less suction, but with extended battery life. Placing the switch in the second position allows the unit to run at high speeds when more suction is necessary.
Clean the vacuum's dust container and filters to keep the unit in good working order. Press the release latch on the side of the unit near the front of the circular door. This allows the door to open, revealing the filters. Twist the filters counterclockwise until they are loosened from the unit.
Remove any loose dust from the filters with a brush, and then wash them with warm soapy water. Hold the unit on its side over a waste basket to empty the dust container. Dry the filters thoroughly and place them in the unit. Twist them clockwise until they lock in place.
Close the circular door and place the hand vac in the charging unit.
