Working mothers, you should always remember to take care of yourself. At work, at home, and in between. I get it, when you are working sometimes it is hard to make time for things beyond work, but it really is important. Exercise, eating right, family time, and even time away from work are always pivitol. For many years I forgot this very important rule, and recently I have been getting back into it. When you make time for yourself, everything seems to work itself out.
As you should now be feeling confident in your decision to work, and you know your children are being well taken care of, we now need to turn to the necessity of taking care of ourselves. Finding an hour in your over-scheduled day can feel difficult and selfish. The idea of taking time for ourselves has become strange and elusive.
When you continually give your energy to others, there will be nothing left if you don't also put something back. So, as a working mother, you absolutely must learn to give yourself time to re-energize and refresh. In order to live my life to the fullest, I need to make myself a priority, and my guess is that you do, too.
I recently joined a program at a national massage company, my latest attempt to snatch some "me-time." My membership gives me a full hour, once a month, that I am committed to. Whether it's a facial or a massage, it is time I've set aside just for me. To be sure that I didn't lose this precious time to other tasks, I pre-paid the full year knowing I would lose both the opportunity and the financial investment if I didn't go. Guilt in reverse, I suppose! The important point is to really think about how to take care of yourself, here are a few ideas
Treat Yourself. We all know money does not grow on trees, but that doesn't mean you can't find ways to give yourself a little something special once in a while. Buy that pair of earrings you have been noticing, or splurge on the heels that you really don't need. Don't overspend, but get something that feels good for you.
My favorite splurge is a daily Starbucks. I have a perfectly great coffeemaker at home, but ordering that latte just the way I like it makes me happy. The $4.50 for my very complicated order is well worth it.
