Effective Ways to Encourage Kids to Floss: A Parent's Guide

Cavity-fighting lollipops, also known as Loloz, can really put your child's oral health over the top. (They work great for adults too!) If you use them twice a day for ten days four times per year then you and your children will see a substantial decrease in tooth decay as well as lower costs at the dentist. Cavity-fighting lollipops are sugar-free and contain no chemicals. The active ingredient is licorice root but they come in delicious fruit flavors to make them more appealing to kids. They are the optimal next step in your child's dental care after the dental fundamentals are in place: semi-annual dentist visits, brushing twice per day, and flossing at least once per day.

Getting your kids to floss can be quite the challenge. It's never too late to start, of course, and it's also never too early. In fact, it's considered better to start as early as possible just to get them comfortable with the somewhat tedious habit. While your young kids might not recognize the benefits, it's important for you to remember that flossing removes food debris from their teeth, helps polish their teeth, and fights plaque and bad breath. You may need to reinforce your motivations if your child proves resistant in the beginning.

One of the best ways to get kids into the process is to do it with them and demonstrate how you floss. Do you make a "c" shape with your floss and lightly scrape the places where your teeth connect? (That's a recommended flossing pro-tip!) Then show your kids how you do that. When you're done properly flossing your own teeth then you can help with theirs. Keep in mind that simply getting them to hang out in place long enough will be a challenge of its own.

If your kids aren't getting the hang of wrapping the floss around their fingers don't hesitate to get some flossing sticks. In addition to making it easier for your kids to simply do the job, flossing sticks are also an opportunity for them to take some ownership of the task which should help with their engagement. You can get flossing sticks in any number of colors and themes to add a little fun.

Don't forget to support their efforts with praise and even rewards if they stick to their flossing schedule. Maybe you could give them a cavity-fighting lollipop after each successful flossing session. You can learn more about cavity-fighting lollipops at http://www.loloz.com.
