Freestanding Baths: Styles, Materials & Design Ideas

Since the late nineteenth century, many different types of free standing baths have been manufactured, with styles departing from the standard cast iron claw foot bath. The only similarity between them would be that they are all stand alone.

Hot tub

Also known as Jacuzzis, the body of some of this kind of tubs have jets on the side that constantly spray warm water onto the tub. It serves as a body cleansing vanity and can double up as a therapeutic space. They are specially built with an entire plumbing system within them.

The best thing about hot tubs is that they can even be placed outside the home. You mostly find them in a separate room adjacent to the main bathroom. The vents and water inlets/outlets are visible on the surface. They have special seats on them for extra comfort while soaking.

They fall under a class of baths known as therapeutic baths, specially meant for hydrotherapy.

Given the amount of heat and moisture generated by spas, you must place it in a well ventilated area so you don't have mold growing all over or respiratory diseases.

Accessible bathtubs

These are made for handicapped individuals. They have grab bars and railings for getting into and out of the tubs. They are constructed with 'entrances' that are part of the bath's structures. They are mostly made of acrylic or fiberglass. The two are lightweight and acrylic is resistant to chipping or breaking. Considering how they are used, these kinds of baths need to be sturdier than others. Fiberglass tubs cost less than acrylic baths. The latter's manufacturing process is more complex.

Baby tubs

These are designed for bathing infants who have not learnt how to sit up. They feature soft grip handheld showers. The floors of such baths are less slippery. There are foldable models which make moving them around even easier. They are designed to incline comfortably and keep the baby in an upright position. Higher end models can be stretched and used over the months, up until the baby can sit up.

Boat Bath

These are so called because they are especially deep to offer a better showering experience. They are typically shorter in length, so they wouldn't be quite as comfortable for taller than average people.

No support tubs

Some independent baths are not supported by 'feet' or 'stands' but instead, their bases rest on the floor. Cleaning beneath however, can be a challenge.

Baths with support

The feet of such tubs are either of the claw foot type or supported on a pedestal.

For all these baths, you can add style and improve functionality when you add accessories like stand-alone fillers. The filler will also act as a magnificent centerpiece.

Being free standing, the choice of positioning remains open ended. You may feel like having it look out toward a garden one time and feel like you need to block out the environment completely another time. Choose a neutral position, because sometimes it gets tiring having to move it around from time to time. Babak Tavakoli works at ACS Designer Bathrooms.
