The Cost of Incarcerated Loved Ones: A Financial Burden
It's hard to be separated from a loved one, the distance and the emotional roller coaster ride that comes with it. But would it be biting or even insane to say that it's much more expensive to reach out to an incarcerated loved one than to lay someone to rest eternally? One would sneeringly remark the sheer stupidity of the concept but with the hidden truths that abound present day society this is a fact that could not be ignored. If we are to rationalize the pain threshold of both situations by comparison it is better for someone we love to be incarcerated than to lose them forever. Simply because the there is still a way to reach out to them, calling them, writing them a letter, visiting them personally if time permits or with the pace of technology even video visitation (Securus Technologies capitalized on this) is an option now open. Of course there would be limits though like restricted hours, that affects length, quantity and quality of a conversation one would not know if would happen again. Intimacy and contact is minimized but they will return home, depending on the gravity of the case and verdict by the jury. But with losing someone to death is much more painful and you won't see them again forever and that alone is enough explanation why would someone choose the former rather than the latter. But with rising costs at unbelievable rates, some people are doing a double take.
The Devil is in the Commission
It's hard to run a prison and with the costs of every basic commodity going through the roof, one way of getting back the costs is through secure inmate calling services. But one could wonder isn't the government helping fund prisons? Isn't government funding enough? Sadly no, with maintenance, wages to pay for personnel and needs of the prisoners, outside communication is compromised and with the tempting commission offers proposed by jail call services corporations it's the only thing prison officials are raking in money, at the expense of the families of the inmates.
In Conflict of Priorities
Families are now in turn are faced to divide their seemingly small income just to talk to their incarcerated loved ones over other priorities. If one would check the statistics, the observable financial demographics of the families of prisoners are those belonging to the middle lower class. Living from paycheck to paycheck and are forced to divide the set budget for overpriced prison calls. So it would not be a shock if some people would choose to prioritize needs to go on and survive daily than keep in touch with those loved ones in prison. With this unfortunate travesty in the light should you think the new President focus on this? We may never know.
