Understanding Depression in Prison Populations: Signs and Contributing Factors
It is such a shame that the massive average population among us belittles or use the term depression as if it's just a state of fleeting sadness. Its more than just sadness, its more than just pent up stress, its more than just environmental causes of within hormonal changes. Its all of it combined followed by a devastating event and in the case of the subject in light, ending up in jail. We could say that those people suffering from depression are still lucky compared to those behind the bars. They still have access to treatment, a chance to go to therapy and other programs to help stabilize themselves but these wonderful opportunities are deprived or even nonexistent to inmates suffering depression regardless of type. The same place they picked depression is the same place that worsens it. Here's an eye opener to what's the evident signs.
The Place Does Not Promote Social Bonds
We don't get it as to why isolation and enforcing minimal communication among other inmates is necessary? Is this to prevent an uprising? To prevent a mob as a massive escape to happen. Surely, the authorities must have a plan already if this happens without pressing such lonely parameters but having social contact minimizes the effect of depression. It takes the load of a things and makes being in prison much easier even without seeing each other, small conversation starters such as inmate calling plans does magic, because you are get someone to hear you out. Remove social contact and continue painting a picture of violence, hostility and chaotic uncertainty plus depriving them of basic needs such as sleep then you have more than enough ingredients to brew depression on an individual. Case in point is sleep, prisoners will be lucky enough if they manage to get 7 hours of sleep but with all the noise from alarms, bullying from the guards at night (clanking bars, waking them up for no reason at all). If this continues to happen you're not just cooking up depression, it can lead to schizophrenia or worse death.
Of Mutilations and Suicide
If the situations above persists and is not resolved could lead too much worse that could deteriorate the mind of the prisoners. If this is being felt the natural instinct is to escape the situation and that is usually done by ending their lives. And many prisoners try to take their lives away by any means necessary but mutilation is always an option. Some are unsuccessful but the others, are a long part of a prison's bloody history.
