Understanding Menstrual Cycle Variations: What to Expect
It is true that no two women have exactly the same experience with their menstrual cycles. Some women are lucky enough to have very light cycles, while others have extremely heavy flows. Some women are very moody before and during their menstrual cycle, while others feel almost no change in emotions or attitudes at all. Men have spent decades coming up with jokes about women's menstrual cycles and how they affect women's temperaments, but for the women who suffer through the cycles these changes are nothing to joke about.
In the past there was little research done as to why women should be affected in so many different ways by the advent of their menstrual cycles. Male doctors often said it was a hysterical reaction and had no basis in a medical problem. Today most doctors know better. Research has found that the hormonal changes that women experience during their menstrual cycles are directly responsible for many of the mood changes and heightened reactions that women experience.
While it is nice to know that there are reasons why women experience changes in temperament and mood, it doesn't really help to explain what can be done to deal with these changes. Oftentimes women are still left feeling like their bodies have betrayed them. For decades women have been taught that they should just deal with it and not make a big deal out of it. Mothers taught their daughters that it was not something they should talk about. It was just something that happened to all women and they would have to find ways to overcome the discomfort and moods, quietly and alone.
Thankfully there are more enlightened views of menstrual cycles now. Though the mystery has not yet been completely resolved, there are now methods that can be used to lessen some of the unpleasant symptoms of the menstrual cycles ”“ medically or through making certain lifestyle changes.
When women see PMS as what it is, and know when and what to expect it, they are better equipped to plan and develop methods for dealing with the changes in their moods and bodies. This lets them remain in control and gives them the confidence to work through the PMS moods and symptoms without letting them become destructive to their relationships and quality of life in general.
