QuestionIs raw smoked bacon safe to eat? ex. Hormel smoked bacon, Smithfeild smoked bacon.
AnswerNot really. Almost all smoked meat has carcinogens in it, and is often heated to 80 degrees Centigrade for a short period. I've been told that some meats are cold-smoked and are genuinely raw, but I'd be very surprised indeed if no preservatives were added to them as well.
That said, if you're just starting out on a rawpalaeo-style diet, it's not the end of the world if you have some smoked meats, while trying out raw meats as well. You can then discard the smoked meats once you've got used to the raw-meat - it worked for me, anyway. Smoked meats, after all, aren't (usually) as bad as cooked-food, even if they aren't healthy in the long run.
