Fatty Liver Diet: Dietary Changes for Early-Stage Condition

Question
Tanya
I am 50.I recently had a medical, and my doctor says I have the early stages of fatty liver, probably caused by a lifetime of booze, and in recent years a low carb diet in a futile attempt to lose weight.
What dietary changes do I need to make? The though of being able to eat carbs again makes me happy!

Answer
Hi Barry,

The best thing one can do for this condition is to stop doing whatever caused it, in your case, as you said, booze  -- other reasons are certain medications (like the antiepileptic drug valproate), genetic factors or diabetes, etc., BUT also too fast weight loss! If that happened to you due to your low carb diet, that could also contribute to your condition.

On the other hand, too much of carbohydrates not only will not help, but can even aggravate it as can do too much saturated fat. There's no medical data on adverse influence of low carb diet on the liver. So, what should you do?

Avoid sweets and generally simple carbs, restrict red meats and saturated fats. Eat more fish, nuts, avocados, olive oil, and canola oil.

Exercise can help a lot!

Good luck,
