AnswerHello Chris!
Thank you for your nutrition question. It sounds like you are on the right track. Steaming is one of the healthiest ways to prepare foods because the food does not become saturated in fat. There is a big calorie difference between fried foods and steamed foods.
Cutting carbs has become a national craze however, the carbs that we should avoid are the "simple" ones. These include foods such as sodas, chips, and high sugar foods. Some carbohydrates such as the complex types(ie. oatmeal, brown rice, barley) can be included in a healthy diet.
When reading food labels avoid foods which have more then 30 percent of calories from fat and our high in calories. For example, if your recommended calorie intake is 1,600 calories daily then a sensible meal should not contain more then 500 calories.
For more information on how to create an eating plan I would recommend visiting www.mypyramid.gov where you can create a healthy eating plan especially tailored to your tastes and calorie level. It also allows you to track your diet in order to monitor how healthy you are eating.
